Our Immunity and The Best Ways to Strengthen It

Sea and tree

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which I’m sure affected us all in one way or another, it’s only natural to be more stringent when it comes to boosting our immunity. The result is a rapid increase of internet searches about our immunity and the best way to strengthen it, what we should do to protect ourselves against the virus, and what supplements to take.

While the whole pandemic problem is slowly tapering off, the world in the last two years was quite confusing. The vast number of (possibly misleading) information on the internet or our social media feeds isn’t helping either.

And this is where I want to step in and tell you precisely what powerful supplements can help boost immunity and optimize our body to fight against most infections.

In this blog, we’ll go over how our immune system works, natural ways to strengthen immunity, and the best supplements for immunity based on science.

white blood cells or leukocytes are our basic line of defense against disease

How does the immune system work?

To understand how supplements work, let’s first do a quick recap on how exactly our body fights off infections in the first place.

The immune system is the body’s main line of defense against unwanted bacteria, viruses, and other known diseases. White blood cells or leukocytes make up the primary line of defense.

We can divide leukocytes into two main types:

  1. Phagocytes – The main attackers, the soldiers that the body sends into combat that actively “smother” viruses and bacteria. This happens before the attackers get broken down into more harmless forms. This smothering or engulfing process is called phagocytosis. Through phagocytosis, phagocytes bind to pathogens and envelop them inside a phagosome. Then, the phagosome combines with lysosomes to dissolve the foreign invaders.
  2. Lymphocytes The body’s strategists. Not only do they “remember” how to attack a specific virus or bacteria the next time they strike, they also help the body develop an immunity to them. Simply said, lymphocytes are the reason why we don’t get infected with chickenpox twice.
Lymphocytes are further divided into B cells and T cells.
B lymphocytes produce antibodies. They create proteins which attach themselves to foreign substances – like how a barcode is coded for a specific product. This attachment is recorded by the body in the form of antigens. When the same type of virus or bacteria gets in and triggers their specific antigens, the bacteria and viruses are immediately marked for removal, effectively bypassing the “bonding” stage.
On the other hand, T lymphocytes are the ones that directly deal the killing blow, so to speak.

The big difference between phagocytes and lymphocytes is how they are programmed to attack invaders. Where phagocytes use the same methods of attack regardless of bacteria or virus, lymphocytes attack pathogens depending on how they beat them previously.

Naturally boosting immunity: Food, Exercise, and Sleep

You’ve probably read or heard it time and time again, but it’s the truth: the best way to boost our immune system is by eating healthy foods and exercising regularly.

But, how exactly do nutrition and exercise strengthen our immune systems?

How Diet Improves Immunity

When you talk about “healthy foods,” we’re talking about vegetables (especially leafy greens), fruits, and lean meat.

Why? Because these foods are nutrient-dense. These foods are actually full of nutrients that supply your daily needs and replenish your body’s reserves on a per-serving basis.

However, don’t forget about fibrous foods like broccoli, kale, beetroot, and spinach.

Fibrous vegetables are really good for you, but they also improve gut health by promoting healthy digestion and nutrient absorption. They also act as prebiotics that promotes gut bacterial growth.

Why is gut bacterial growth critical in strengthening our immune system?

In the context of immunity, many studies confirm that our gut health determines the strength of our immune system. What they mean is, the healthier our gut microbes are, the stronger our immune system becomes.

The reason? As it turns out, more than 70% of the cells that make up our immune system live in our gut! When we’re sick, we don’t really have much of an appetite. It’s also a reason why so many illnesses can be traced back to digestive problems.

How Exercise Boosts the Immune System

So we understand how food factors in how strong our immune system is. How about exercise? Recent studies show a positive link between regular physical activity and our immune system.

  • Experts say the heavy breathing associated with tough workouts can help “flush” bacteria out of lungs and airways, essentially getting rid of infections before they even happen.
  • The enhanced blood circulation can improve white blood cell response, enabling them to find and attack invaders earlier.
  • The rise of body temperature during exercise can sometimes act as a quasi-fever that helps slow the growth of harmful bacteria.
  • Cortisol, the stress hormone, goes down after exercise, and many studies correlate high cortisol levels with the risk of illnesses.

Sleep, Melatonin, and Health

Last, but certainly not least, are our sleeping habits.

Sleep has always been an important pillar of health, but more studies confirm just how critical it is for our immune system.

  • Sleep is the only time when our body can focus on recovery. That’s right – sleep does help you heal
  • It’s also the only time your body can release melatonin without other biochemical processes interrupting it. Melatonin is known as the sleep hormone, but studies show that the hormone also helps the body respond to infections better and faster.
  • This explains why chronically sleep-deprived people catch colds and fevers easier, or take longer to recover than those who have healthy sleep routines.
